Caledon Representation on Regional Council

By way of a walk-on addition to the November 26, 2020 Regional Council meeting, Brampton and Mississauga brought forward a motion to approve a reduction in Caledon representation from 5 members to 3 members, and increase Brampton’s representation by 2 members. The composition of Regional Council would result in the following breakdown after the next election for the new term of council:

  • Mississauga 12
  • Brampton 9
  • Caledon 3

Before this change can come into effect, a public meeting must be held, a by-law must be passed, and a triple majority must be achieved at the local municipal councils.

Notes:  Triple Majority: a majority of the three local municipalities pass a resolution consenting to the new by-law.

Current Regional Council representation: Brampton 7, Mississauga 12, Caledon 5 (If Brampton and Mississauga vote yes, and Caledon votes no, this meets the triple majority requirement and the by-law will come into effect for the next term of council)

On Thursday December 17, 2020, the Council of the Regional Municipality of Peel will hold a Public Meeting for the purpose of obtaining input from the public on the proposed by-law to change the composition of Regional Council. Official Public Notice. A copy of the proposed by-law will be available on December 11, 2020 and can be obtained by contacting the Office of the Regional Clerk or from the Council Agenda page.

Anyone wishing to make verbal delegations at the public meeting can do so virtually or in person. Please email the Office of the Regional Clerk or call 905-791-7800, ext. 4465.
